I seem to recall it being called "light painting" but I'm sure it has a more technical name.

I just fiddled with the manual settings on my camera, here's the details I used:

Shutter Speed: 16/1 second
F Number: F/8.0
Focal Length: 6 mm
ISO Speed: 64

You stand in a very dark room. Have the subject stand extremely still. Basically the camera picks up illuminated objects like cell phones, lighters, flashlights, etc. But if you have a second person moving constantly and shining the light in a pattern (or just waving it around), the second person won't actually appear (most of the time) as long as they're not directly illuminated. Or you can do like I did in most of mine and wave it around while trying to hold as still as possible.
